Following in Beethoven’s footsteps: Claudia Yang, one of the few Malaysian musicians who has made a name for herself internationally, performing at Sogo KL.

LOVERS of fine arts were treated to an An Evening with Claudia Yang and 1MCAT Art Exhibition at Sogo KL in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The event featured an exhibition of contemporary art pieces by 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism Festival (1MCAT 2013) artists and a recital by accomplished pianist Claudia Yang.

Present were Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah’s daughter Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz and Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

Dr Ng said Malaysia aimed to attract 36 million tourists by 2020, starting with Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

“Tourism is one of the six pillars of the Malaysian economy.

which is on until next month.

“We hope the country attracts more quality and higher-spending tourists,” she said.

She said tourists flocked to Europe, the United States or Singapore to shop for contemporary art and the objective was to put Malaysia on the map as well.

She said of the three auctions held last year, one netted RM800,00 — compared to only RM165,00 in 2010 when Malaysia first started auctioning its contemporary art.

“This year, we expect more Malaysian auctions,” she added.

Dr Ng also said tourism was expected to create 500,000 jobs by 2020.

Also present was renowned shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo.

1MCAT 2013, which is on until next month, features a series of exhibitions, talks and art-related activities in collaboration with art galleries, public institutions and shopping centres.
