2nd Solo Exhibition Yuli's 'Mythologies' At Artemis Art Gallery

The first time we got to know Yuli, what struck us was the vibrancy of his works. You wouldn’t know just by seeing this handsome young man of 27 years that he has Asperger’s, part of the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). But we see Yuli first and foremost as an artist, and his talent, as can be seen in his works, speaks for itself.
Asperger’s has certainly not been a hindrance to Yuli’s capability as an artist, and in fact we believe it gives him a unique sense of creativity, allowing him to be taken seriously as a professional artist. His ability to recast classic mythologies with a seamless mix of more contemporary icons is testament to this, as seen in the body of work that will be showcased in this exhibition.
Mythologies is Yuli’s second solo exhibition, and focuses on an area that greatly interests this young artists – myths and legends. While most of the icons are culled from the artists deep interest in the area, he manages to incorporate imagery from more modern sources as well, particularly from the Japanese manga art genre, motoring and skateboard street cultures, areas which also interests Yuli greatly.
In addition, some of the pieces depict contemporary popular culture, given the same splendid visual treatment as the works surrounding mythological subject matter. Particularly striking is Yuli’s collage of Korean culture, within which the familiar pop star Psy features prominently.
