4th Art Auction Malaysia
By Swee Chin PAN

8 PM

There was a buzz at the extreme right corner of the White Box when I arrived that Wednesday evening. So I headed there first and discovered that Argentinian artist, Gustavo Charif, was being photographed by the press. His piece, Lamborghini Odyssey, was commissioned by Lamborghini KL - JH Italia and will be auctioned by Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers with no charge. The piece is estimated to sell between RM25,000-RM 35,000 – Gustavo even used the original orange car paint to paint the body of the car! The proceeds obtained will be used to buy art books which will be donated to the resource centre of the National Visual Art Gallery (Balai Seni Visual Negara). According to the press release by Fuman Art, the estimated price is quite affordable compared to the price of similar sized paintings by Charif. We will have to wait and see…

91 pieces (excluding the one by Gustavo) by 55 artists are on offer this time, and these artists include the late Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, the late Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal, Abdul Latiff Mohidin, Dato’ Mohd. Hoessein Enas, Yusof Ghani, Dzulkifli Buyong, Lim Kim Hai, Anuar Rashid, Chia Yu Chian, Khalil Ibrahim, Chang Fee Ming, Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Jalaini Abu Hassan, Chong Siew Ying, Kow Leong Kiang, Marvin Chan, Raja Shahriman, Anurendra Jegadeva as well as two of the Matahati boys – Bayu Utomo Radjikin, and Hamir Soib @ Mohamed.

Huang Yao features again in the Chinese ink section. Let’s see whether his Woman with Durian (1980) or Fireflies (1980) opens with bids many, many times over their estimates! If you recall, the starting bid in the Auction in May 2012 for his Bridesmaid opened at RM60,000.00 – ten times the estimate of RM6,000 – RM8,000! And it eventually sold for RM72,000.00.

There were many present that evening. Some were scrutinizing the artworks…deciding whether to bid or not, if so, which piece to bid for…and some were just enjoying the artworks. I only spotted a couple of artists present that evening and here they are with their paintings: Shafie Hassan(together with his wife) with Klungkung Bali, and Lui Cheng Thak with Glories.

I did not attend the official opening launched by YB Dato' Mukhriz Mahatir the next day, Thursday 18 October at 3 PM. I did however attend a gathering organized by some Art Friends on Saturday evening, 20 October 2012. It was a more intimate get-together and we could catch up in a more relaxed fashion. Artist, Jalaini Abu Hassan, came and here are some photographs of him with some of the guests present – the laggers! And yes, these are the two paintings of his on offer at the auction. I did not realise that he started experimenting with bitumen way back in 1995 – he used it in Se-Hayat.
