The VIP Opening Night on Friday night, 20 April saw a very mixed crowd. The usual suspects were there but there were also many other unfamiliar faces. There were couples and families whispering and deciding together which artworks they would like grace their walls.

The evening included a tribute to the late Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal…a lovely gesture by Henry Butchers, don’t you think? It was a twenty minute video presentation documenting his achievements and contributions to the local art scene. The National Art Laureate believed very firmly that art is for everyone. And there are five of his works on offer this time and his Marang Malam is estimated to fetch between RM120,000 – RM160,000.

After the weekend, on Monday 23 April the Art Auction was officially launched by the Acting Director General of Tourism, Dato’ Hj. Azizan Noordin, on behalf of Tourism Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Ng Yen Yen.
So head on down to the White Box to feast your eyes on the wonderful artworks before some of them disappear behind closed doors – unless you intend to bid for one of course!
Art Auction Malaysia 2012 features at White Box, Map@Publika from the 21 April – 5 May 2012 & Auction Day is on Sunday 6 May 2012 at 1PM
