I met ShyeVin last year at Artemis Art’s group exhibition, Emergence, held at their previous premises at Publika. She only brought four paintings with her that time, and UC Loh, co-owner of Artemis, informs that they have all been sold.
This time round at her first solo exhibition in Malaysia, she has brought twenty paintings, all in oil. Two very fine paintings painted in 2009 and depicting rural scenes, are not for sale. One is of a kampung (village) house by the river in her hometown of Kuala Kurau, Perak; and the other, three canoes at the sea shore at sunrise in Lombok, Indonesia. Looking at these two paintings, it is amazing that she only took up painting in oil seven years ago, when she and her family moved to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Trained in Multimedia, Shyevin has always loved drawing and painting and before she left for Vietnam, she painted only in watercolours and acrylics. But after discovering oil, she got hooked and now paints exclusively in this medium, developing her impasto style five years ago. Her colours are vivid and bright, especially those of flowers.
Traveling is a passion of Shyevin’s and in this exhibition, we see what has caught her eye – Sapa, surrounded by picturesque rugged mountains and rice terraces in the remote northwest mountains of Vietnam, and winter in Hokkaido, Japan. In fact, her favourite painting is Hakodate (Red Warehouse) and in her own words: I love it because I feel the romance of the place and the soul of the building. It was snowing, and the white snow and the red warehouse made a big contrast which really inspired in terms of colour and composition.

After deciding that art was her life, Shyevin went full-time as a painter two years ago. And when she is not painting, she teaches as well as running events at her own gallery in Ho Chi Minh City, the VinGallery.
