Big Pond

Ajis Mohamad

For Ajis Mohammad, being an artist does not merely mean looking
for a subject, painting it and selling it.  It goes beyond being artistic
and garnering accolades & awards.  There has to be a reason for
‘artistic creation’.  An artist is blessed with a gift - a chance to make
a difference through his art. He ‘creates’ beautiful underwater
scenes, rich with colourful corals and abundance of marine life, not
only for visual enjoyment, but to remind us that scenes like these are
becoming scarce due to pollution, destruction of coral reefs and bad
fishing practices.
Ajis is a scuba-diver, an underwater photographer, marine ‘activist’
and a greatly sought after marine artist. He has even devised a way
to literally paint under the ocean, with methods that do not disrupt
the delicate eco-system. In Darwin Project 2010, he brought art to
the ‘Sea Gypsies’ (Bajau Laut of Semporna, Sabah), a community
of fishermen and their families who have never had formal schooling.
They were encouraged to put into drawing what they see in the waters
and the result is ‘raw’ drawing by instinct.
