Big Pond

Fuziah Ismail

From a mundane bank job to full-time artist. Fuziah, on
lunch breaks used to frequent a nearby gallery. One day,
she saw a watercolour painting of a pigeon which moved
her so much, she aspired to be an artist from that day on.
But first, she was wife & mother to four children. Then,
turned full-time artist in 2000 with encouragement from her
husband, Haris Ribut.  Though she had his support, he
never interfered with her artistic work. This self-taught artist
persevered to find her own style which is greatly influenced
by dance, culture and tradition. “Kena rajin” (have to work hard),
she says, is the only way to perfect one's technique, one's skill.
Being artistic & inspired is just the catalyst.

Her oil on canvas paintings feature multiple women in motion,
depicting the strength of women unified by common goals,
goal of motherhood, of sisterhood. Their movement in dance
shows a connection to tradition & established norms of society.

In 2003, Fuziah & her husband were invited to hold a joint exhibition
at Elle Six Art Gallery to celebrated their 20th  Wedding Anniversary.
Fuziah's '”Music of Peace” painting was also chosen for a Peace
Poster by Amal Institute in Sudan in 2003.
